How Hangal Coffee became one of India's first EUDR-ready coffee exporters

EUDR COMPLIANCE
01

Challenge

Hangal Coffee, a coffee exporter based in Kushalnagar, India, sources from several thousand smallholder farmers and a few large estates. Until recently none of that procurement was digitised. Farmer details, purchases and records lived on paper, in Excel and in Tally.

As European buyers moved toward the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), coffee reaching the EU would need every farm plot mapped and geolocated as GeoJSON, each farmer's identity, consent and risk status captured, and full traceability from farm to shipment.

Building that on top of a paper and spreadsheet process, across thousands of scattered smallholders, was a standing start. Hangal set out to be one of the first Indian coffee exporters ready for EUDR, which meant digitising the first mile end to end.

02

Approach

TRST01 deployed TRST01Chain, its first-mile platform, and trained Hangal's team to run the mapping and onboarding themselves.

  • Handed over the technology stack: the Field Executive App and the IntelliTrack app.
  • Trained the team to draw plot polygons, onboard farmers, capture KYC and run risk assessment on mobile.
  • Used the app's offline capability to map farms in areas with no network coverage.
  • Digitised procurement records, replacing the paper, Excel and Tally process.

03

Solution

With TRST01Chain, Hangal's coffee is traceable from the farm plot to the European shipment, run on its own digitised process.

  • Farmer onboarding with KYC, consent and plot polygon mapping (GeoJSON), captured on mobile, offline-capable apps.
  • Plot-level risk assessment and satellite deforestation analysis on every mapped farm.
  • Transaction capture through IntelliTrack, replacing paper and spreadsheets with digital records.
  • Traceability from farm to shipment, with a Due Diligence Statement (DDS) for every Europe-bound consignment.
  • Hundreds of farmers mapped and hundreds of EUDR-ready shipments sent to Europe over two years.

What’s next

Two years in, Hangal Coffee continues to map more farmers and ship EUDR-ready coffee to Europe. Its early move has been covered in the national press, including The Hindu BusinessLine.
