Blockchain technology helped Tandur Tue Dal bag GI Tag

Hyderabad: Blockchain technology couldn’t have come at a better time for Tandur red gram (tur dal) to get the coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Not just the Tandur tur dal, the blockchain technology came in handy to prove origin of around 360 GI products and prevent counterfeits, GI experts said.
Experts said blockchain technology is now used extensively in Telangana to trace origin of food products.
Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agriculture University along with a tech solution company used the blockchain technology for traceability of Tandur tur dal.
The university in collaboration with TRST01 (Trust-O-One) introduced the blockchain technology in seed traceability of pigeon-pea and safflower. Experts said the technology platform generates a unique hash and integrated QR codes for the seed.
In the case of tur dal, the university and TRST01 did seed traceability from the nucleus seed and maps. Experts mapped each step in the value chain, captured related information and stored the data in a ledger or blockchain.
Subhajit Saha, GI agent and legal head of Resolute group, said blockchain technology will be a great advantage to GI-certified products by giving the consumers a 100% assurance of the authenticity of the product.
Experts believe that the blockchain technology can be a watchdog mechanism, which can be monitred by multiple users and validate compliances to prevent coun terfeits and also establish product genuineness.
Prabir Mishra of TrayamBhu Tech Solutions Private Limited said blockchain technology is a natural fit for GIs as they depend on origin, authenticity and quality
“The technology shows consumers the geo location where the product is harvested and detailed information on who produced it. The information supplied and displayed in blockchain is reliable and tamper-proof,” he explained.
